This course examines philosophical and scientific work ? some classical and some contemporary ? on the phenomena surrounding our ability to adopt the points of view of other people. The literature covered in this course includes ancient religious and philosophical remarks on these phenomena, modern philosophy?s interest in the moral sentiments, 19th and 20th century phenomenological and analytic philosophical work, and recent experimental research into the neurological, behavioral, and social-psychological ground and consequences of our shared lives.
