Speaking of the first Czechoslovakian president, in The Power of the Powerless Václav Havel writes ?Masaryk believed that the only possible starting point for a more dignified national destiny was humanity itself?, and that ?humanity?s first task was to create the conditions for a more human life?. In this course, we examine the role that higher education plays in Western society. Particular attention is given to 1) the relationship between higher education and the civil rights and civic duties of the members of a society, and 2) how a people?s participation in and exercise of these rights and duties in turn shapes the character of the society.
