COURSE SUMMARY:
This course provides a survey of Russian history from the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 to
the presidency of Vladimir Putin. The course will discuss Marxist-Leninist ideology, the
creation of the Stalinist state, the Soviet bloc in Europe, the attempts at reform under
Gorbachev, the transition to a new Russian state, and the background to the war in Ukraine.
The course will emphasize political, diplomatic, economic, and cultural history.
