ZS 2023: Sport in World History (Dr. Bruce Berglund, Augsburg University, Minneapolis, USA) Course aims and outline: This course will explore the political, social, economic, and cultural changes of the last two centuries, around the world, by studying the development of modern sports. In looking at the histories of team sports, athletics organizations, and the Olympic movement, we see themes of sectarian and ethnic division, class conflict, imperialism, racism, gender roles, commercialism and economic globalization, and the influence of political ideology. In this course, we will address these issues by looking at the development of modern sports in Europe and North America, their spread to different world regions, and the creation of our current, global sports market. Throughout the course, there will be discussion of how sport in Habsburg Bohemia, the First Czechoslovak Republic, socialist Czechoslovakia, and the Czech Republic connects to larger global developments.
