The aim of the course is to acquaint students in detail with current philosophical views on language, and with the discipline-shaping discussions that have taken place within the framework of philosophy in connection with language over the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The course presents significant perspectives on the nature of language, linguistic meaning, and the philosophical importance of language, from both analytic and continental philosophical perspectives. At the end of the course, students will be both familiar with the overall development of the philosophy of language from the start of the twentieth century until today, and conversant with some of the major positions in the field.
