The subject covers the history
of Christianity in the wider area of the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans,
Central and Eastern Europe. Attention is paid mainly to the development of the
Orthodox direction of Christianity in Byzantium, the description of its
classical form and characteristics, and its subsequent spreading to neighboring
geographical areas. The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the main
features of the development of Eastern Christianity, especially those that
still have an impact on current events. After
completing the course, students will acquire the following knowledge, skills
and abilities: they will be able to orientate themselves in the differences
between Western and Eastern forms of Christianity, and will be able to
understand the cultural differences and peculiarities of Southeast and Eastern
Europe resulting from different historical, political and religious
developments.
