Nazism and Stalinism represent the most tragic period of modern European history. This course is devoted to the philosophical and literary reflection of these two historical phenomena. Our main guide will be Hannah Arendt, a representative of the first academic wave of research on totalitarianism, and her book The Origins of Totalitarianism. Arendt's perspective will be complemented by the perspectives of revisionist historians (Sheila Fitzpatrick and others) and Czech writers Václav Havel and Milan Kundera.
